Applicant refers to an entity that applies for a patent. Before September 16, 2012, only inventors could apply for patents in the US. This was changed on September 16, 2012 , so that an assignee (or patent owner) may now be the applicant, as has been customary in other countries for many years.

Applicant data will include includes the inventor-applicants for WO records when US is a designated state.

Since the EPO Register data updates the applicant information when reassignment of an application occurs and DocDB DOCDB does not update this information, the "original" applicant may differ from the epo and intermediate formats.
