Description

main-classification

The format for all US classes is zero-filled to a 3-character class and 3-character subclass. Characters following those 6 numbers are not zero filled and non-significant trailing zeros are removed. There is no punctuation present. Slashes and decimal points can be easily inferred for display purposes.
For JP classes, the format is the original delivered from JAPIO.

Note

As of 2105, the USPTO has transitioned from using the over 100-year-old U.S. Patent Classification (USPC) system to the Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC), a new classification system jointly developed with the European Patent Office (EPO). The USPTO currently only uses CPC for classifying new utility patent documents; however, it will continue to use U.S. Patent Classification for classifying design and plant patents.
